Police are investigating the sudden death of a man in Londonderry.

John Street in the city was closed off as officers attend the scene on Thursday morning, however it has since reopened.

It is understood the body of a man in his 30s was discovered on Wednesday night.

Sinn Féin MP Elisha McCallion said the community has been shocked and saddened by the death.

“The local community has been shocked and saddened. Any life lost in our city is one too many.

“The PSNI have said there is nothing to suggest a crime has been committed and I could call on anyone with information on what happened to come forward.

“I want to express my thoughts and sympathies to the family and friends of this young man at this sad and difficult time," she said.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Enquiries are at an early stage to determine the cause of death and there are no further details at present."
