Police have confirmed that they are investigating a report alleging historic abuse at a Northern Ireland school.

The BBC has reported that the investigation involves abuse allegations at Newry High School in Co Down.

In a statement to the BBC the school said that the allegations "relate to a period several decades ago and not to any individual currently connected with the school".

The Newry High School spokesperson said there "is no suggestion of any current safeguarding concerns or issues in respect of Newry High School".

Detectives from the Public Protection Branch are currently investigating the allegations.
