Police murder probe after man killed and woman critical in Warrenpoint shooting

Police have begun a murder investigation after a man was shot dead and a woman critically injured in a shooting in Warrenpoint.

It happened on the Lower Dromore Road at 7.30pm on Friday.

SDLP MLA Sinead Bradley said it happened in a quiet area close to the golf club and was shocked to hear about it.

"You just wouldn't expect it," She told the Belfast Telegraph.

"This is dreadful news to think one family, one home, will hear they have lost a loved one in this manner.

"Whatever the circumstances for someone to have lost their life is devastating news."

One woman has been taken to Daisy Hill Hospital after the incident. She is receiving treatment and her condition has been described as critical.

Sinn Fein MLA Sinead Ennis, posting on Twitter said: "Making people aware that a serious incident has occurred in the Lower Dromore Road area in Warrenpoint.

"We have been in contact with PSNI who are at the scene. People should avoid the area if possible.

She added: "The community of Warrenpoint are shocked and stunned by this news.

“Our first thoughts are with the family of the victim. The PSNI have the area sealed off and I would appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward to assist the investigation."

Police have opened a murder investigation and are appealing for anyone with information to contact detectives on 101.
