Police probe link in series of school break-ins

Police are investigating a possible link between a spate of burglaries at schools across Co Down.

In the latest incident, during the early hours of Monday morning, a safe was stolen from St Patrick’s Primary School in Saul, close to Downpatrick. It was later recovered along with a number of other safes in a vehicle in the Branish Road area.

A PSNI spokeswoman said one man had been arrested but was released on bail pending further inquiries.

Last week, items were taken in burglaries at Spa Primary School in Ballynahinch, St Mary’s High School in Downpatrick and Millennium Integrated Primary in Saintfield.

Meanwhile a spokeswoman for the PSNI urged anyone who lived near schools to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity by phoning 0845 600 8000.

She said: “Any suspicious activity on school premises after hours or during holidays should be reported to police on or in an emergency dial 999 and ask for the service you require.”
