Police probing blaze at house

By John Mulgrew

Police are treating a massive fire that gutted a large house in Co Down as suspicious.

Fire crews attended the scene of the blaze in Mayobridge after officers were called out at 3.27am yesterday.

One of the doors of a two-car garage beside the large detached house, in a rural location at Tamnaharry Hill, was daubed with roughly scrawled graffiti in black paint which read: 'We will get u!'

The roof of the sizeable property was all but gone, leaving only the chimney and supporting walls still standing.

Firefighters could be seen walking on the top floor of the building through the broken windows and rising smoke.

It is not yet known what caused the fire or whether there was any malicious intent behind the blaze.

It is understood that a couple who live in the house were due home from honeymoon, but had been delayed.
