Police to extend anti-drugs campaign

By Brendan McDaid

Police in Londonderry are to restart a campaign which has resulted in suspected drug dealers being apprehended in the city.

Operation Silent Guardian will be concentrated in the Cornshell Fields area of Steelstown over the coming days.

Leaflets are to be dropped through doors across the estate in the Greater Shantallow area in a bid to empower the community to root out those pushing drugs.

The move follows a successful operation in July conducted by Foyle City North Neighbourhood Team.

PSNI Sergeant Phil Martin said: “The community have clearly stated that drug dealing in our city is unacceptable and we support their concerns. Our last leaflet drop resulted in some very useful information from the public, including the names of three people who we were unaware of as being potential drug dealers.

“It is important that we continue to work together to put pressure on those who use drugs to ruin our communities and line their own pockets.

“The leaflets clearly explain the type of information we need to tackle drug dealers and the various ways it can be reported.”

Amongst the information being sought is whether people know the address of the property where they suspect drug dealing is taking place.

Anyone aware of drug dealing on their street is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000, or in an emergency 999. Contact City North Neighbourhood Team: 07585 979446 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
