Portadown pensioner dies and woman taken to hospital after devastating house tragedy

Police are investigating the sudden death of a man in his eighties at a house in Portadown.

It is understood the incident happened at Levaghery Gardens in the town.

A post mortem will be carried out in due course.

A woman, also believed to be in her eighties, has been taken to hospital for treatment.

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesman said it was called to the Levaghery Gardens area of Portadown at 4.53pm on Wednesday after reports of a male unconscious.

Two rapid response paramedics, two ambulance crews, a Hazardous Area Response Team officer (HART), as well as the charity air ambulance with a helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) crew on board, attended the incident.

One elderly female patient was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Southern Trust said the woman was stable in hospital on Wednesday evening.

DUP councillor Margaret Tinsley, posting an image of an air ambulance in the area, said: "Sad news coming from Levaghery Gardens, in the vicinity of the Church.

"The emergency services are dealing with an incident which has resulted in the death of one elderly individual and another being admitted to hospital.

"My thoughts and prayers are with this family, just devastating for them."

DUP MLA Carla Lockhart said: "Tragic news this evening in Portadown with the death of an elderly person and another one who has been taken to hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with both this person and the family concerned."

UUP MLA Doug Beattie expressed his sadness at the news.

"Sad news coming from Levaghery Gardens, Portadown," he said.

"Emergency services are dealing with an incident which has resulted in one death and another being admitted to hospital.

"My thoughts are with the family and friends at this difficult time."
