A Portstewart man who is charged with murdering his mother at their home last June has appeared before North Antrim Magistrates Court via video-link.
Speaking only to confirm his identity, Alun Kinney Evans (32) of Knockancor Drive appeared before District Judge Liam McNally in Coleraine on Monday.
Evans also faces a second charge of being in possession of a class B drug with intent to supply three days before the killing. Margaret Evans (69), also known as Margo, was found beaten at her home in the seaside town on June 4 last year.
During the short hearing the court heard that files, amounting to three boxes, were being sent to senior counsel for consideration and directions.
Evans, wearing a grey coat and red jumper, had previously been an inpatient in the secure mental health unit at Knockbracken Hospital in Belfast, however he was moved to Maghaberry Prison in December when the mental health order detaining him expired. A prosecuting lawyer told the court she expected a significant update on the case on the next occasion. District Judge McNally adjourned the case until March 23.
