Postcode lottery ‘unfair’

Strangford MP Jim Shannon, DUP MP for Strangford, has called for the cold weather payments to be sorted out.

Mr Shannon said he had been contacted by pensioners from the Glenn estate, Newtownards, Portaferry and Comber where temperatures had not been above zero in more than a week but who were being told they were not entitled to the payment.

They were being told that government guidelines only awarded the payments in certain postcodes.

“The present scheme is unfair and many people in my constituency are suffering cold when they should have a payment to help them buy fuel,” said Mr Shannon.

“This payment could mean the difference between a healthy winter and a weak one for many in my constituency and I fear that for some it could be the difference between life and death.”

Mr Shannon has asked that the procedures be reviewed.
