Posties braced for rush

Postmen and women in east Belfast are gearing up to deliver a festive mailbag of hundreds of thousands of cards, gifts and online shopping orders for Christmas.

East Belfast delivery office manager Johnny Crozier said: “We are asking our customers to help ensure that all cards and parcels are delivered in good time by making a note of this year’s last recommended posting dates and by posting early. It also helps us enormously if people address their items carefully and correctly, check they’ve attached the right postage and remember to use the postcode.”

Royal Mail will be laying on up to five additional flights daily and will be boosting its normal 1,000-strong vehicle fleet with 100 extra vans and trucks. It will also be providing seasonal employment to a further 350 people.

To beat the rush, make sure you post early and certainly before this year’s latest recommended Christmas posting dates: UK — Tuesday, 21 December — first class

Saturday, 18 December — second class

Thursday, 23 December— Special Delivery

Monday, 13 December — Western Europe

Friday, 10 December — USA, Canada, Japan and Eastern Europe

Monday, 6 December — Rest of World.
