Pregnant woman hit with bottle by intruder

By David Young

A pregnant woman was punched and had a bottle smashed on her head while her young daughter was present in a savage attack in her home.

The incident happened at a house in Burren Meadow in Newcastle, Co Down, in the early hours of yesterday after a man forced his way into the victim's house.

A 35-year-old man was arrested a short time later at Westland Avenue in the town.

Local councillor Laura Devlin said: "It's absolutely shocking to hear of a pregnant woman attacked in her own home.

"I hope the lady makes a full recovery.

"As a mother myself I was totally shocked to hear of the assault.

"I would strongly urge anyone with any information to contact the PSNI."

Police said: "At approximately 5.35am it was reported to police that a male forced his way into an address and assaulted the pregnant female occupant.

"She sustained non-life threatening injuries after she was punched and had a bottle smashed on her head.

The female's young daughter was also present.

The female was left distressed by her ordeal."

Police urged anyone with information to contact detectives at Ardmore on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 407 08/04/2018.

Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.

Burren Meadow is a relatively new social housing development in the Co Down town.
