Press Photographer of the Year competition: Which striking image will be pic of bunch at awards?

By Rebecca Black

Northern Ireland's top Press photographers are vying to be crowned first in class.

These arresting images are just some of the work that has been entered by local snappers taking part in the BT Northern Ireland Press Photographer of the Year competition. The cream of the crop will be recognised at a major awards ceremony to take place in the Hilton Hotel in Belfast next Thursday.

The judges include Ian Down, Daily Mirror picture editor, Irish Times deputy picture editor Bryan O'Brien, and Marie McMullan, BT's head of consumer sales.

There are nine categories: news, politics, business, features, individual study, sports, sports feature, people, and picture stories, with two overall prizes being awarded to BT Photographer of the Year and BT Provincial Photographer of the Year.

Judges have already described the standard of the 300 images entered as "impressive". A Belfast Telegraph photograph taken by David Fitzgerald is among the entrants, a stunning shot of a rioter being knocked off a PSNI Land Rover by a water cannon during summer disturbances.
