Prison for flag rioting police Land Rover surfer

By Paul Higgins

A man who draped himself across a police Land Rover during a Union flag riot has been jailed for eight months.

Belfast Crown Court heard that as well as jumping on to the bonnet of the armoured vehicle, Paul Spence (44) motioned for his fellow rioters to attack it.

Officers were trapped inside the Land Rover as it was surrounded at the junction of the Albertbridge Road and Templemore Avenue in east Belfast.

Unable to move neither forward nor back, it was rocked and shaken by around 100 rioters.

Spence, from Woodvale Street in Belfast, was arrested as he walked away from the scene on January 5 this year. Judge Gordon Kerr QC said Spence impeded the Land Rover's progress to enable other people to attack it.
