Prison officer among five arrested over banned items

By Staff Reporter

Five people - including a prison officer - have been arrested as part of an investigation into the smuggling of banned items into Maghaberry Prison.

Class A and B drugs and £10,000 in cash were also seized.

The 50-year-old prison officer was arrested yesterday morning at Maghaberry Prison on suspicion of conveyancing prohibited articles into a prison, misconduct in public office, possession of criminal property and being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs. He was taken to Musgrave police station for questioning.

Three women - aged 26, 50 and 55 - and a 28-year-old man were also arrested, and three properties were searched in Newtownabbey, Belfast and Kinallen.

Chief Superintendent Tim Mairs said: "This operation is a good example of how collaborative working can disrupt crime and also demonstrates our commitment to keeping people safe by removing harmful drugs from society."
