Prisoner threatened to cut ex-partner to pieces with machete on news of pregnancy
A prisoner who phoned his ex-girlfriend from jail and threatened to "cut her to pieces" with a machete after he found out she was pregnant by someone else has been jailed again.
James Gerard Donegan (25), from Carnhill, admitted threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend on August 7 during his call to her from Magilligan Prison.
When he was arrested, Donegan told the police that he had acted in the heat of the moment when he found out that his ex-girlfriend was pregnant by another man.
His defence barrister told Londonderry District Judge Barney McElholm that Donegan had "reacted to the news of the pregnancy in an impulsive and immature manner."
Mr McElholm described Donegan's criminal record of 61 previous convictions as appalling.
As well as jailing Donegan for three months, the District Judge also imposed a five-year restraining order, banning Donegan from intimidating, pestering, harassing or molesting his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend.
