Pro-life campaigners in online 'blackout'
There was a 'blackout' on social media yesterday by anti-abortion campaigners.
Scores of people turned their profile pictures to black with the hashtag #darkestday to mark the liberalisation of the laws on Monday.
Some said the "soul of Northern Ireland had died".
Twitter user James McCullough said the empty profiles would be "a sombre reminder of the lives lost to abortion in the years to come".
Another user added: "God help the unborn of Northern Ireland and throughout the Earth."
Anti-abortion organisation Right To Life UK described the move as "an incredibly dark day" for NI.
DUP MP Emma Little-Pengelly, posting a picture of a rose with a black background, said the changes to abortion laws were "shameful".
While abortion is now decriminalised, a new legal framework for access to services is planned to be in place by March 31.
In the Assembly on Monday, the DUP attempted to put a bill forward to stop the changes. However, the move was blocked by Stormont Speaker Robin Newton.
