Probe after prisoner assessment unit shut
A prison unit housing pre-release inmates has been temporarily closed after prison bosses launched an investigation into “concerning incidents”.
The Prison Service would not reveal details of the incidents, simply stating yesterday that it has suspended activity at the Prisoner Assessment Unit and returned all inmates housed there back to HMP Maghaberry.
Governor of Maghaberry Prison Pat Maguire said: “Recent incidents at the unit, brought to my attention by staff, have caused concerns, and while those incidents are being fully investigated I have decided, in consultation with the Director General, to temporarily suspend all prison business at the unit. All prisoners who are currently housed at the unit will be returned to Maghaberry Prison.”
The Prison Service said no further comment would be made while investigations continue.
The Prisoner Assessment Unit is for prisoners reaching the end of their sentence to assist with reintegration back into the community. Inmates can benefit from home leave, weekend release and day release to engage in employment.
