Probe into murder of RUC duo still ‘open’

The PSNI has confirmed that the investigation into the double murders of Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Bob Buchanan is still “open”.

The PSNI issued a statement yesterday after a lawyer for the Breen family asked if all evidence obtained by the Garda investigation into the 1989 killings had been provided to the RUC investigation team at the time.

John McBurney referred specifically to a witness who was working at a garage close to the scene of the IRA ambush in south Armagh and asked whether his evidence had been obtained and processed.

The detail emerged last Friday when another witness was giving evidence to the Smithwick Tribunal in Dublin.

Mr McBurney said the evidence “brings into sharp focus the question of the thoroughness of the Garda investigation in the aftermath of the tragedy and raises questions as to what information was provided in a timely fashion to the RUC investigation team”.
