PSNI alert as laser shone at helicopter

The PSNI has warned that shining lasers or other types of lights at aircraft could have disastrous consequences, following an incident with the police helicopter.

The aircraft was flying in support of officers patrolling on the ground in Annacloy, Co Down, at 8.30pm on October 12 when a laser pen-type device was shone directly at them from somewhere in the Orchard Grove area.

The crew of the helicopter reported this to officers on the ground who called to a house to speak to an occupant, who was cautioned and reported to the Public Prosecution Service.

Chief Inspector Deirdre Bones said: “Pointing laser pens and lights at aircraft has the potential to blind or distract the pilot.

“The consequences could be disastrous.”
