PSNI appeal for couple who intervened in New Year's Eve Lurgan assault

PSNI have issued an appeal to speak to a couple who intervened in a New Year's Eve assault in Lurgan to save the victim from further punishment.

The 42-year-old victim was found at around 2.40am on the ground near to Alexandra Crescent.

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threateneing.

Writing on Facebook, a spokesperson from PSNI Craigavon said: "There is currently a man lying in a hospital bed with serious head injuries after a vicious assault on New Years Eve into New Years Day.

"We believe there were a male and female couple who intervened and helped the victim, possibly saving him from much worse. We would very much like to speak to them."

The statement also says the attack happened outside of a takeaway on Union Street, a short distance from Alexandra Crescent.

Detective Inspector Stephen Harvey said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone with information which could assist with our investigation, to contact detectives in Lurgan on 101 quoting reference number 269 of 01/01/18.”

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime."
