PSNI condemns TA base bombs find

Two partially-exploded bombs have been found close to a Territorial Army base in Northern Ireland.

The improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were left in two duffle-type bags placed near the fence of the facility in a residential area of Londonderry.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said an examination of CCTV footage indicated that the bombs left in Rockport Park "partially initiated" at about 11.35pm last night but "failed to fully explode".

The IEDs have now been made safe by Army Technical Officers (ATO). No bomb warning was made.

The finger of suspicion will again fall on dissident republicans opposed to the Northern Ireland peace process.

PSNI chief inspector Tony Callaghan said described the incident as a "truly reckless act which endangered local people's lives".

"These devices had the capacity to kill or maim," he said.
