PSNI lured into petrol bomb attack by hoax alerts

By Lesley-Anne Henry

Police have come under sustained attack while investigating a hoax security alert.

A spokesman for the PSNI said the alert at North Street in Lurgan was a deliberate attempt to "lure" officers into the area.

Petrol bombs and other missiles including two fake bombs were hurled at police and Army technical teams who were called to examine an object left at premises at about 4.30pm yesterday.

A number of homes were evacuated while North Street, Antrim Road and Lake Street were sealed off. The Lisburn to Portadown railway line was also closed with passengers being bussed between the two stations. There were no reports of any injuries.

SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly condemned those responsible for the attacks.

"This is yet another incident that portrays Lurgan in a bad light and one which all the decent and hard-working people of the area are fed up experiencing," she said.
