The west Belfast PSNI has posted a Christmas message in Irish.
The greeting read: “Nollaig shona duit agus do do chlann uilig. Go raibh athbhliain i síochán dúinn uilig.
“Ó gach duine sna póilíní in Iarthar Bhéal Feirste .”
And for non-Irish speakers, they helpfully provided an English translation:
“Happy Christmas to you and yours. May we all have a peaceful New Year.
“From all in West Belfast PSNI”
The outreach gesture from the police force came on the same day that the Department for Communities decided to withdraw funding for a bursary scheme that enabled around 100 children to attend summer Irish language classes in the Donegal Gaeltacht.
The £50,000 programme was established under Sinn Fein’s Caral Ni Chuilin.
Last night the former Culture and Arts Minister described the withdrawal of the funding as “disgraceful”.
