PSNI refers itself to Ombudsman over Lurgan bar brawl incident

By Staff Reporter

The PSNI has referred itself to the Police Ombudsman after a man suffered a head injury as officers drew their batons to break up a bar brawl in Lurgan.

It happened in William Street in the early hours of Monday morning.

Three men were arrested during the incident which the PSNI described as "a large ongoing fight".

In a Facebook statement, PSNI Craigavon said: "As phone footage circulating online shows, a large crowd was present and, whilst breaking up the large brawl, three males were arrested.

"Batons were used by our officers and a male received a head injury. The male is now conscious and communicative, receiving hospital treatment. We took the step of notifying the Ombudsman ourselves and a full investigation will begin upon receipt of a complaint."

Police were wearing body cameras, and they have called for anyone with other footage of the brawl to come forward to help with the Ombudsman's probe.
