Puigdemont pulls out of bid to be Catalan president
Catalonia's fugitive ex-leader has temporarily withdrawn his bid to get back his old job as the Spanish region's president.
Carles Puigdemont, in a message from Brussels where he fled to escape arrest, said he is standing aside so the Catalan parliament can find a candidate to form a regional government that presses ahead with deadlocked efforts to win independence.
He suggested the selection Jordi Sanchez, who is currently in jail awaiting possible charges over rebellion and sedition.
However, the Spanish government, which has imposed direct rule in the region, said it will not allow anybody facing legal action over secession to become Catalan president.
