Race fans on course for good day out? You bet!

By Pamela Ballantine

This weekend some of the finest four-legged fillies will be strutting their stuff at Down Royal racecourse and I can assure you the horses will be going a lot quicker than the one that was outside Hadskis in Commercial Court.

Details of the two-day Summer Festival of Racing were revealed and it won't be just the horses and their connections coming away with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of prize money – the best dressed lady on Saturday will also be walking away with a fabulous trip to Istanbul.

Many horses that take to the race track start their careers in point-to-points and we may have seen some stars of the future at the one on Dr Peter FitzGerald's land near Crumlin. Over 250 guests enjoyed the hospitality of the man who set up Randox Laboratories over 30 years ago. It is now a global market leader in the clinical diagnostic industry. Sadly my betting slips were torn up, but it was a great day out.

Philanthropy fortnight came to a close in Café Vaudeville and what a success it was. Give Inc Giving Circle hosted the evening with Giving NI and Harbinson Mulholland. I was fascinated to hear the story of philanthropist Charlotte Grobien who set up Give It Away and how we can do a little bit to help many. I must admit philanthropy is easier to say after a few glasses of the House of Champagne's finest.
