Rathfriland in shock as crash kills pensioner

By Rebecca Black

A Co Down village was in shock yesterday after the death of a popular pensioner in a road accident.

The death sparked concerns about the safety of some of the streets in the centre of Rathfriland following the incident in which a recycling truck and a red Rover 100 car were in collision.

A woman in her 80s was killed in the crash on Downpatrick Street. Last night she was named locally as Essie Brown from just outside Rathfriland.

She is understood to have worked on Dromore Street in the village for McSpadden's Solicitors.

Ulster Unionist councillor Glenn Barr said people were shocked and saddened by the death.

"People just can't take it in," he said. DUP councillor David Herron said the mood in the village is very sad.

"People are devastated," he said.

Police have issued an appeal for information about the crash which occurred at around 12.30pm.
