Rebekah Shirley: I'm so honoured to be Miss Northern Ireland

By Claire Williamson

Meet the new Miss Northern Ireland.

Rebekah Shirley, a student from Ballymoney, took the crown ahead of 25 other finalists on Monday night.

The 18-year-old said she was "still in shock" at winning the title.

"Just to say I'm representing Miss Northern Ireland at Miss World is an absolute honour," the former Ballymoney High School pupil said.

Rebekah is currently studying media, TV and film at Ballymoney NRC College and hopes to go on to work in the TV industry.

Growing up Rebekah had always followed the Miss NI competition and finally decided this was the year to enter it.

"I just thought I had nothing to lose," she said. "It's such an amazing opportunity to be able to represent your country as Miss Northern Ireland."

And now that she's won it, Rebekah can't wait to get started. "I want to give my absolute all to everything I do and just try and be as successful as I can," she said.

Now that Rebekah is a role model for young girls across Northern Ireland, she says it's all about being "confident in yourself".

"I would say let your personality shine through."
