Police in Mid Ulster arrested two suspected drunken drivers following separate smashes - one of them being fortunate to escape death after his car ended up on its roof.

The first crash happened on Magherafelt Road early yesterday. "Thankfully no one killed, although you do wonder how," the PSNI wrote on its Mid Ulster Facebook page.

"As well as drunk he doesn't have a full driving licence so shouldn't be on the road. He's been arrested for motoring offences as well as for the drink-driving."

Hours later a patrol found another crashed car, "this time he was going sideways".

"The driver tried to make off on foot across the fields but was no match for police dogs Alfie and Rocco," the PSNI said.

"Extra treats and a well earned lie-in for them this morning."
