Released thief went on a fresh crimewave in Belfast
A convicted thief stole a man's mobile phone within hours of being released from prison, a court has heard.
Dean Wood took the £450 device, punched one victim and chased another during a new crime spree in Belfast last Friday.
Wood (24), of Ferndale Grove, Newtownabbey, pleaded guilty to theft and two counts of assault.
He was refused bail pending his sentencing next month.
Belfast Magistrates Court heard Wood only got out of jail on Friday after serving a term for theft and handling stolen goods.
Defence solicitor Seamus Leonard sought to have him released from custody to seek help.
"There is something clearly going wrong in his life causing him to offend," he acknowledged.
According to Mr Leonard, the new offences were not serious, violent crimes.
But District Judge Fiona Bagnall replied: "I don't know if the person who got punched and somebody who got chased would say it was non-violent crime."
Remanding the defendant in custody, Judge Bagnall fixed sentencing for March 24.
