Moving the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (Dard) to the site of a former Army barracks would help regenerate one of Northern Ireland’s worst economic blackspots, an MP has claimed.
Gregory Campbell said relocating Dard — which is seeking a rural site outside Belfast — to Ballykelly would create vital jobs.
The 94,000 sq ft former MoD site went on the open market in March 2011 but failed to attract a high enough private sector offer.
Mr Campbell said relocating Dard to the site would “give a very necessary boost to the Limavady/Ballykelly area which has suffered significantly on the jobs front”.
“Studies show that where a large department such as Dard does relocate, within five years 90% of the people working there will be living within a 10 or 15-mile radius, boosting the local economy,” the East Londonderry MP added.
