Residents evacuated after bomb discovered in west Belfast

A viable pipe bomb has been found during a security alert in west Belfast.

Police and army bomb disposal experts were called to investigate a suspicious object found at a building site in the Moyard Parade area of Ballymurphy after 2pm yesterday.

A number of nearby residents were earlier advised to evacuate the area, although most people opted to stay in their homes. All residents were able to return to their houses at around 8pm.

A controlled explosion was carried out on the bomb.

Meanwhile, police came under attack from stone-throwing youths while attending a security alert in Co Armagh.

A large crowd gathered at Brownlow Road, Craigavon, after army bomb experts were called to examine a suspicious object at about 4pm.

The suspicious device was later declared a hoax.
