The shooting of two men in a punishment-style attack is a throwback to the dark days, it has been claimed.
The men, both aged in their 30s, were shot in the legs in Poleglass on the outskirts of west Belfast.
It happened in the Glenkeen area around 8.45pm on Thursday.
The pair were taken to the Royal Victoria hospital, where their condition is described as stable.
SDLP councillor for the area Brian Heading condemned the attack.
"Unfortunately this seems to be slipping us back to the dark days," he said.
"There is a demand among the residents to say we don't want this coming back on our streets again, that's what they've said to me, loud and clear."
Sinn Fein councillor Stephen Magennis also condemned the shooting.
"This attack on these two men was wrong and must be condemned," he said.
"The people responsible for these attacks need to listen to the local community who want an end to this type of brutality."
