Residents’ parking plans welcomed

SDLP regional development spokesperson, Conall McDevitt (right), has welcomed progress on the introduction of residents’ parking schemes in some of the most congested parts of Belfast.

The South Belfast MLA said: “Residents will welcome news that Roads Service is currently considering residents’ parking schemes for Markets East off Cromac Street, Markets West off Cromac Street, Stranmillis village area and Lower Malone.

“Roads Service has advised me that discussions with residents groups in the Stranmillis and Lower Malone areas are well advanced. The scheme proposals have been agreed and officials are now preparing to carry out the informal consultation exercise with the wider community.

“The timescale for implementing residents’ parking schemes within South Belfast will largely be dependent on the success of achieving support from each of the local communities in the areas under consideration, and on the availability of funding at the time.

“That said, I am calling on the minister to prioritise these schemes as they are in a part of the city which is under massive pressure for parking. We need to protect our city communities from becoming flatland.

“If we are serious about encouraging families, young couples and elderly people to live in these streets then we need to find a way of being able to ensure they have access to parking.”
