Respected bookmaker Robert McCoubrey passes away
The racing fraternity is mourning the news that a major player in bookmaking, Robert McCoubrey, has died.
Mr McCoubrey, one of Ireland's biggest punters and most adventurous bookies, passed away yesterday evening.
A big presence on course and at point-to-points, Mr McCoubrey was in action at Kirkistown on Saturday past and news of his death has shocked all who knew him.
Mr McCoubrey was also a successful businessman, owning a major electrical store.
He owned several racehorses during his career. Rusty Tears was a high-class horse that delivered - landing him a gamble - when it won the 1977 Cathcart Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.
