Restaurant blaze being treated as suspicious

By John Mulgrew

The Fire Service is treating a blaze at a former Co Down restaurant as suspicious.

A fire caused significant damage to the former Villa Toscana restaurant on the West Circular Road in Bangor.

It's understood firefighters were called to the blaze at around 9pm on Tuesday.

Four crews and an aerial appliance from Belfast were required to bring the fire under control - and to stop it spreading to properties nearby.

A spokesman for the Fire Service said the front annex of the building had been totally destroyed.

Police were forced to close the road between the Newtownards Road and Clandeboye Road junctions for around half an hour due to poor visibility caused by smoke.

Fire investigation officers are now working to determine the exact cause of the blaze, but arson is suspected.
