Return the stolen Mary statue, says DUP man

By Staff Reporter

A DUP councillor has called for a statue of the Virgin Mary stolen from a site in west Belfast to be returned immediately.

Brian Kingston appealed for anyone with information on the "upsetting crime" to contact the PSNI.

Locals claimed the statue appeared on a loyalist bonfire in Lanark Way. Police have said they are aware of the claims and are investigating. Loyalists in the Lanark Way area have denied it was on the bonfire.

Local councillor Brian Kingston said: "I have spoken to senior PSNI officers and local community representatives and no one has seen this alleged incident occurring. I have been assured by people close to the bonfire builders that no statue has been placed on the bonfire. The PSNI have received reports of the theft of a statue from a memorial in the Springfield Road area.

"I would appeal for the return of that item and for anyone who knows who was responsible for this upsetting crime to pass that information on to the police."

North Belfast DUP MLA William Humphrey said the allegations were "without foundation" and had caused a great deal of anger in the greater Shankill community.
