Richard McAuley faces court over partner's murder in Ballymena

By Nevin Farrell

A 41-year-old unemployed man has appeared in court charged with murdering his partner in Ballymena on Father's Day.

Richard McAuley, whose address was given as Townhill Road in Portglenone, Co Antrim, appeared at North Antrim Magistrates Court in Coleraine yesterday.

He is charged with murdering 32-year-old Denise Dunlop, who died after an incident at her home in Centuripe Avenue, Ballymena, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It is understood she was stabbed.

During yesterday's short court appearance a police officer said he believed that he could connect the accused to the murder charge of Ms Dunlop.

McAuley, who was wearing a blue jumper and blue trousers, stood in the dock during the short hearing with his hands clasped in front of him.

Defence solicitor Nigel McIlrath said there would be no application for bail and he had no questions for the officer.

No other details of the case were outlined to the court yesterday.

Deputy District Judge Laura Ievers remanded Mr McAuley into custody and he will appear again via video-link at Ballymena Magistrates Court on July 10.
