Robbery victim hit with hammer

Detectives are appealing for information after a man was robbed and assaulted as he was trying to get into a car.

The incident happened in the Market Street area of Downpatrick at around 9pm on Monday.

Police received a report that as a man was about to get into his car, two men assaulted him. The victim was then pushed to the ground where his assailants kicked and punched him.

"He was also hit with what is believed to be a hammer," a PSNI spokesman said. "The men made off with a sum of money."

Both males are described as being in their early 20s, about 5ft 7in tall and wearing dark clothing and trainers.

The man was treated in hospital for his injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. Police have appealed to anyone with information to call them on 0845 600 8000.
