Role models for larger ladies, Deirdre and Amy eye runway fame

By Joanne Sweeney

Big really is beautiful as these two gorgeous Northern Ireland ladies prove.

The curvy women have emerged as two of the favourites from the Belfast heat of the Simply Be new model national competition.

Amy Purser from Belfast, who is a size 16 and 6ft tall, and 22-year-old Deirdre Daly from Toome, a size 18 and who stands at 5ft 9ins, are blazing a trail for larger women to embrace their fuller bodies.

They are among the thousands of women across the UK vying to be selected as the face - and body - of Simply Be's new Christmas campaign, plus a £1,000 prize to spend in store.

They will know by the end of this month if they have been shortlisted for the final.

For Amy, an analyst with a Belfast law firm, taking part in the competition has given her some new found confidence. She said: "I've never really had the confidence about my body and would never wear a bikini on holiday or anything like that.

"I would never have thought to enter any competition like this or to think of myself as a model, but my boyfriend spotted the competition and encouraged me to enter."
