As he prepares to tee off at The Open Championship at Portrush this summer, Rory McIlroy will be doing so as the richest young sports star in Britain and Ireland for the second year running.

The Holywood ace again tops the Northern Ireland Rich List, boasting wealth of £138m, making him the richest sporting great aged 30 and under.

The world number four is only the third golfer ever to win four majors and 15 PGA titles before he turned 30 on May 4.

Rory also has a string of golfing wins to his name including 13 titles on the European tour, netting him £30m.

His North American career earnings are even higher at £34.8m, with his playing income sitting comfortably alongside various lucrative endorsements including 10-year $100m contracts with both Nike and TaylorMade, and associations with Omega watches and NBC Sports.

These deals bring in an annual endorsement income of around £25m, helping considerably towards the £28m net increase in his wealth in the past year - the biggest increase of all the young sports stars.

Rising to second place this year is Wales' record goal-scorer and four-time Champions League winner, Gareth Bale. The first of 15 footballers in the list, the Real Madrid winger (29) has seen his net worth rise by £20m this year to £94m.

Manchester City's record goal-scorer Sergio Aguero (30) is ranked third at £58m while his fellow club player Raheem Sterling (24) enters the Rich List for the first time with wealth put at £18m.

The only non-footballer in the list other than McIlroy is boxing world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (29), who saw a £14m increase in wealth this year to £49m.

Also on the list for the first time this year is England team captain Harry Kane. The 25-year-old Tottenham striker enters with a £16m fortune and the potential for a lot more to come.

The final newcomer this year is Manchester United's Romelu Lukaku (25) who is also valued at £16m.

The 156-page special edition of The Sunday Times Magazine, published tomorrow, reveals the wealth of the 1,000 richest people in Britain in its 31st annual edition. Sports stars account for just over a third of the Young Rich List.
