Rory McIlroy's the top choice on RTE, if not the BBC SPOTY

By Emma Jane Hade

He may have been pipped to the post by Lewis Hamilton in one popularity contest, but golfer Rory McIlroy is at the top of leaderboard in Ireland after being named as RTE's Sports Person of the Year.

The 25-year-old Co Down man controversially lost out on winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award earlier this month, despite being the bookies' favourite.

But an RTE panel last night recognised his outstanding year on the fairways, which included two Major wins. The World No.1 also played a vital role in Team Europe's victory at the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy previously won the RTE award in 2011. Last year's winner was another Ulsterman, champion jockey Tony McCoy.
