Row over tricolours outside school

The erection of Irish flags outside a mainly Protestant school in Londonderry has been described as “intimidating”.

The tricolours have appeared outside the state school with a placard commemmorating “republican heroes” being placed outside the local minister’s home at his Presbyterian manse in Bellaghy.

UUP assembly member for Mid-Ulster, Sandra Overend told the Irish News the move has been designed to drive a wedge between communities in the area where relationships are “cordial”.

Mrs Overend said Bellaghy was a mixed community but that “it’s obvious that there is still an unsavoury element of intolerant people who cannot move on”.
