Royal Mail to open up offices on a Sunday

By Steven Alexander

Customers will be able to pick up packages on a Sunday at Royal Mail delivery offices in Northern Ireland.

The initiative is a boost for online shoppers.

It should also help workers who are not at home during delivery hours who find it difficult to collect their undelivered mail.

The Belfast South & Central office in Tomb Street, and Londonderry delivery offices in Great James Street are to pilot Sunday opening from this weekend.

They will open between 12pm and 4pm.

Kellin McCloskey, Head of Postal Services at the Consumer Council, welcomed the scheme.

"Almost eight in 10 consumers prefer to collect items from a delivery or sorting office," she said.

Failed delivery attempts are not only a major source of frustration and inconvenience to consumers but can also bear a significant cost for carriers and retailers.

"We will look forward to seeing how the pilot works in practice and if it can be further rolled out to all delivery offices in Northern Ireland."
