RTE cost-cutting threat to Belfast jobs

A cost–reducing exercise being carried out by Irish broadcaster RTE could threaten its Belfast office as well as a number of other regional hubs in the Republic the Sligo Champion has stated.

In response to growing fears, Rosaleen O’Grady, the Mayor of Sligo, where one of the broadcaster’s offices is located, urged RTE to protect the county’s office which she described as ‘a big part of the whole community’.

While RTE officials did not confirm the possibility of office closures, Sligo Champion revealed that it is set to make cuts of €25m (£20.1m) with €15m (£12.1m) of savings to be sought from staffing costs this year.

A spokesman for RTE told The Sligo Champion that the financial position of RTE remained serious and that the organisation was committed to balancing its books.
