Runner found dead after Mourne Mountains search

A male runner has died in the Mourne Mountains.

In a post on social media, the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team said they received a request for assistance in the area just after 12.00am on Thursday and began a search operation.

"Following a request for assistance just after midday today, the team were involved in the search and subsequent recovery of a missing runner," they wrote.

"In conjunction with local police and police air support, a total of 17 members responded and stood down at 5.30pm.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with family, friends and all involved today."

There are no further details at this time, however police said the man's sudden death is not being treated as suspicious.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police attended the scene of the sudden death of a man in the Newtown Road area of Rostrevor on Thursday, 27th December.

"A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course, however, the death is not being treated as suspicious at this time."
