Sandy Bay herons get feathers ruffled in beach battle

By Amanda Ferguson

An amateur photographer from Larne has captured a series of captivating images of grey heron at Sandy Bay.

Charlie Duncan (50), also an ornithology enthusiast, took the photographs just days ago and shared the results on the Memories of Larne Facebook page.

The site has more than 3,600 members, all with an interest in getting back to their roots and sharing stories of days gone by, plus old and new images of Larne and the area.

Charlie told the Belfast Telegraph he got back into photography, as a hobby, around four months ago and is enjoying every minute of the relaxing past-time.

"Sandy Bay is a great place to take pictures," he said.

"At this time of year there are lots of birds in the area like redshank, heron and sandpiper.

"I watched the heron fight for two or three minutes – it was quite a spectacle." After it was over, they sat apart."
