Santa makes his first stop in Belfast

By David Young

Children's eyes widened in wonder last night as Santa made his first visit to Belfast this year.

His appearance at Belfast's Victoria Square shopping centre was heralded by a festive parade of dancing elves, fairies, stilt-walkers, acrobats, pixies and musicians.

The shopping centre was transformed into a glittering Christmas fairyland, with 217 trees adorned with more than 71,000 lights all twinkling merrily for the grand occasion.

Thousands of parents and children watched the spectacular Christmas show, which climaxed with the illumination of the centre's Christmas tree.

"I don't think I've ever seen anything as cute," compere Cate Conway of Q Radio said as the tiniest of the Doogan Dance infants danced their way toward the magnificent tree.

"This has got to be the biggest, cutest Christmas party in Belfast," she added.
