Santa moved by reception as he turns Derry lights on
An estimated 11,000 people turned up for the Christmas switch on last night to mark the beginning of a weekend of festivities in Londonderry.
It was all change as the ceremony took place at Ebrington Square instead of the traditional Guildhall Square.
There were squeals of delight from the throngs of children – but it was only their shouts that managed to save the day as Santa had clearly forgotten about the new location and he was spotted in the Guildhall scratching his head and wondering where the children were.
Helped by compere Teresa Craig, the children shouted as loud as they could and thankfully Santa heard them.
As if by magic, he was transported across the River Foyle from high up in the Clock Tower, and Derry was once again lit up like a wonderland.
Mayor Martin Reilly said: "I think Santa was impressed by the beautiful new location, and I hear he's moved everyone on to the 'nice list' after his visit."
