Schoolgirl hit by car fights for life in hospital

By Connla Young

Prayers were being said last night for a schoolgirl who was fighting for her life after being struck by a car near Carrickfergus.

The 12-year-old was hit by a red Vauxhall Vectra near Milestone filling station on Middle Road around 4.55pm yesterday.

The road was closed by police investigating the accident.

The injured girl, who is from the Carrickfergus area, was taken to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children following the accident.

A spokeswoman for the hospital last night described the 12-year-old’s condition as “critical”.

Carrickfergus councillor May Beattie, who also sits on the council’s community safety committee, last night said her prayers were with the injured girl and her family. The DUP woman, who urged road users to take care, said: “All our thoughts are with the family. It’s an awful shock for the whole community.

“I have a 15-year-old granddaughter and when I heard about this I thought ‘is she home?’

“I will keep this girl in my prayers tonight and hope the surgeons and whoever is working on her will pull off a miracle.”
